We are delighted in your interest in a research visit at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance.

Research Visit with a Scholarship

Eligible Applicants

The Institute will award research grants to a limited number of domestic and foreign researchers who want to spend up to 6 months with us.

Scholarships are available for:

- Domestic and foreign doctoral students
- Domestic and foreign postdocs and other advanced-stage researchers
- Domestic and foreign professors and other researchers with high scientific achievements

The scholarship program is especially intended to give female applicants an opportunity to obtain further professional qualifications. Therefore, female applicants are strongly encouraged.

Travel and Other Expenses

Scholarship holders are not reimbursed separately for travel costs or other expenses.


Medical Insurance

The Max Planck Institute does not insure guest researchers. Proof of adequate medical insurance is to be submitted within two weeks of the commencement of the scholarship.

You can either extend the coverage of your existing insurance, or take out a special insurance policy that meets the requirements of § 257 of the Social Insurance Code (SGB). Special insurance coverage can be purchased upon arrival at the Institute from a German insurance provider. Please contact the International Office or the administrative staff regarding this issue.


Funding Through Third Parties

Any type of scholarship or grant that you receive from third parties for your research stay at the institute must be disclosed to the Institute’s administration and will be deducted from the Max Planck Society grant.

How Do I Apply for a Scholarship?

The application should be submitted in full at least three months before the beginning of the desired program. Only applications completed in full will be processed.

An application is only possible through the electronic application form (please enable „pop-ups“).

Required documents:

- CV and photo
- Presentation about your research topic
- Two letters of recommendation
- List of publications

Research Visit without a Scholarship

Researchers who want to attend the Institute without submitting a scholarship application can submit a request by e-mail.

Fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation or those sponsored by other exchange programs are welcome.
 

Travel and Other Expenses

Guests who do not receive a full scholarship from the Institute may be granted a limited housing allowance, travel allowance and/or meal allowance, based on individual consideration.

Accommodation in Munich

Institute-owned apartments are only available on a limited basis. The International Office checks availability and can help you with an overview of additional low-cost accommodation and rental agencies.


Language Skills

Sufficient knowledge of the German or English language is required to facilitate the integration and contact with the scientists at the Institute as well as to make the research stay as rewarding as possible.

The required level of German depends mainly on the planned research project.
